Packers Creek Hydroelectric Project
Polar Consult Alaska, Inc. and Chignik Lagoon Power Utility have put together a Hydroelectric Feasibility Study. In July 2009, a grant was awarded from Alaska Energy Authority for $150,000. This funding has been used for installation of a stream gauge, permitting, and design of a hydroelectric facility. This phase of the project is now complete and additional funding was awarded to begin phase III of the project, construction!
Project Benefits:
Alleviate Some economic hardships
Eliminate about 89% of 45,000 gallons of diesel
Excess energy could be used for heating school or other local structures
Enable improvements to local infrastructure such as freezer/processing facility to further improve local economy
Significantly reduce the necessity of hauling, storing and consuming fossil fuels
